The Olympic Spirit: A Wonderful World |
| |
As part of IOC's Celebrate Humanity campaign during 2006 Winter Olympics, Madiba beamed across television channels -
see video:
For seventeen days, they are roommates.
For seventeen days, they are soulmates.
And for twenty-two seconds, they are competitors.
Seventeen days as equals. Twenty-two seconds as adversaries.
What a wonderful world that would be.
That's the hope I see in the Olympic Games.

A Long Walk to Freedom |
| |
In his autobiographical work, published in 1995, Nelson Mandela says
I have walked that long road to freedom.
I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way.
But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill,
one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.
I have taken a moment here to rest,
to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me,
to look back on the distance I have come.
But I can rest only for a moment,
for with freedom comes responsibilities,
and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended.
